Passage: Read Deuteronomy 22-25.

What we say especially in a vow or promise is important because God's word is important. 23:21-23 "If you make a vow to the Lord your God you shall not delay fulfilling it for the Lord your God will surely require it of you and you will be guilty of sin. But if you refrain from vowing you will not be guilty of sin. You shall be careful to do what has passed your lips for you have voluntarily vowed to the Lord your God what you have promised with your mouth." Vows must be kept because God keeps his promises and wants us as his people to imitate his moral character. We must be faithful to keep our marriage vows because we want God to keep his vows to be faithful to us. And our marriages are a picture for the world to see of God's relationship with us.
